John Hospers was an American philosopher, politician, and writer.
He was the Libertarian Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1972. He was the party’s first presidential nominee. He did not win any electoral votes on election day itself, but later received an electoral vote for President from a faithless elector.
John was the son of Dena Helena and John de Gelder Hospers.
John’s paternal grandfather was Teunis de Gelder Hospers (the son of Jan “John” Hospers and Hendrika Henriëtte/Henriëtta Middelkoop). Teunis was Dutch, from Hoogblokland. Jan was the son of Hendrik Hospers and Cornelia Roschar. Hendrika was the daughter of Klaas Middelkoop and Maaike De Gelder.
John’s paternal grandmother was named Johanna M. Wormhoudt. Johanna was born in Iowa, to Dutch parents.
John’s maternal grandfather was Korstiann/Korstiaan/Kirstiann Verhey (the son of Jacobus Verhey and Jane Nieuwendorp). Korstiann was born in Iowa, to Dutch parents. Jane was the daughter of Hendrik Nieuwendorp and Leijntje van Pelt.
John’s maternal grandmother was Maria Kuyper (the daughter of Adrianus Kuyper and Dina Koster). Maria was Dutch, and was born in Charlois, Rotterdam Municipality, Zuid-Holland.
