Jim Gilmore is an American politician. A Republican, he was Attorney General of Virginia, from January 15, 1994 to June 11, 1997, Governor of Virginia, from January 17, 1998 to January 12, 2002, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, from January 18, 2001 to December 5, 2001, and U.S. Ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, from July 2, 2019 to January 20, 2021.
He was a candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 2008 and 2016.
He was married to academic Roxane (Gatling) Gilmore, until her death.
Jim’s paternal grandfather was James Stuart Gilmore (the son of David Dawn Gilmore and Jenero Josephine Roberts). David was the son of William Gilmore and Alice Leckie. Jenero was the daughter of James Dallas Roberts and Mary Ary/Arid Jane Marshall.
Jim’s paternal grandmother was Fannie Lillian Estes (the daughter of Asa N. Estes and Effie White). Asa was the son of Reuben E. Estes and Ann Eliza Taylor. Effie was the daughter of John W. White and Laura Alice Lillard.
Jim’s maternal grandfather was Albert Lincoln Kandle (the son of Albert Sanford Kandle and Mary Elizabeth Hankins). Jim’s grandfather Albert was born in New Jersey. Jim’s great-grandfather Albert was the son of John Kandle, Jr. and Hannah Brooks. Mary was the daughter of Eleazer F. Hankins and Elizabeth Surrick.
