He is the son of Kathy and Carl Route. His name JID is after his grandmother’s nickname for his jittery behaviour.

JID’s paternal grandfather was Carl Louis Route, Sr. (the son of Belton Route/Rout and Louise Coleman). Carl was born in Georgia.

JID’s paternal grandmother was named Mamie Clyde Singleton.
