James Buchanan was an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the 15th President of the United States, having served from March 4, 1857 to March 4, 1861. He was elected to the position in 1856.

He was also a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania, from March 4, 1821 to March 3, 1831, a United States Minister to Russia, from January 4, 1832 to August 5, 1833, a United States Senator from Pennsylvania, from December 6, 1834 to March 5, 1845, the 17th United States Secretary of State, from March 10, 1845 to March 7, 1849, and the United States Minister to the United Kingdom, from August 23, 1853 to March 15, 1856.

He was a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1852.

President Buchanan was the son of Elizabeth (Speer) and James Buchanan. His father was born in Blairlush, County Donegal, Ireland, to a Protestant family. His mother was also of Scots-Irish descent.

President Buchanan’s paternal grandfather was named John Buchanan (the son of William Alexander Buchanan and Jean). John was born in Blairlush, Romelton, Donegal, Ireland. William was the son of Thomas Buchanan and Jean.

President Buchanan’s paternal grandmother was Jane Russell (the daughter of Samuel Russell and Mary Wait).

President Buchanan’s maternal grandfather was named James Speer.

President Buchanan’s maternal grandmother was named Mary Patterson.
