James B. Weaver was an American politician. As a member of the Greenback Party, he was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Iowa, from March 4, 1879 to March 3, 1881, and again, from March 4, 1885 to March 3, 1889. He served for the Union Army in the Civil War, and was an advocate for farmers and laborers; as well as for expanding the money supply, regulation of big business, and further settlements on Native American land. He was a member of the Republican Party until 1876, and a member of the Democratic Party after 1908.
He was Greenback Party’s nominee for President of the United States, in 1880, and the Populist Party’s nominee for President of the United States, in 1892.
James was the son of Susan and Abram Weaver, a farmer. His family moved to a farm north of Cassopolis, Michigan; and to homestead in Iowa, when he was a child, living in Chequest Creek in Davis County, then Bloomfield. James was married to schoolteacher Clarrisa/Clara Vinson, until his death, with whom he had eight children. His great-great-grandson is actor and musician Stephen Collins.
James’s paternal grandfather was Judge Henry Weaver. Henry was born in New York.
James’s maternal grandfather was Joseph Imlay (the son of John Emley/Imlay and Jane King). John was the son of John Imlay, whose father was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, with English heritage; and of Sarah Lawrence. Jane was the daughter of Joseph King and Mary Simcock.
James’s maternal grandmother was named Elizabeth Robinson.
