Henry Clay was an American lawyer, planter, orator, and politician. He was the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, from March 4, 1811 to January 19, 1814, March 4, 1815 to October 28, 1820, and March 4, 1823 to March 4, 1825, and the United States Secretary of State, from March 4, 1825 to March 4, 1829. He was also a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Kentucky, from March 4, 1811 to January 19, 1814, March 4, 1815 to March 3, 1821, and March 4, 1823 to March 4, 1825, and a U.S. Senator from Kentucky, from December 29, 1806 to March 4, 1807, January 4, 1810 to March 4, 1811, November 10, 1831 to March 31, 1842, and March 4, 1849 to June 29, 1852.

He was a Democratic-Republican Party nominee for President of the Unites States in 1824, the National Republican Party’s presidential nominee in 1832, and the Whig Party’s presidential nominee in 1844. He was also a candidate for the Whig Party’s 1840 and 1848 presidential nominations.

Henry was the son of Elizabeth (Hudson) and John Clay.

Henry was married to Lucretia Hart, with whom he had eleven children.

Henry’s paternal grandfather was John Clay (the son of Henry Charles Clay and Mary Mitchell). Henry’s grandfather John was born in Virginia. Henry’s great-grandfather Henry Charles Clay was the son of Charles Clay and Hannah Wilson. Mary was the daughter of William Mitchell and Elizabeth Innes.

Henry’s paternal grandmother was Sarah Watkins (the daughter of Edward Watkins and Mary Bishop Taylor). Sarah was born in Virginia. Edward was the son of Henry Watkins and Katherine/Catherine/Katharine Rachel Pride. Mary Bishop was the daughter of James Taylor, who was born in Carlisle, England, and of Mary Bishop Gregory.

Henry’s maternal grandfather was George Hudson (the son of John William Hudson and Elizabeth Harris). George was born in Virginia. John was the son of William Hudson and Elizabeth Jennings. Henry’s great-grandmother Elizabeth Harris was the daughter of William Harris, who was born in Broomfield, Essex, England, and of Temperance Overton.

Henry’s maternal grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth Jennings (the daughter of William Henry Jennings and Mary Jane Pulliam). Sarah was born in Virginia. William was born in Leipfield, Yorkshire, England, the son of Humphrey Jennings and Mary Millward. Henry’s great-grandmother Mary Jane was born in Leipfield, Yorkshire, England, the daughter of Joseph Pulliam and Mary Holiday.
