Harold Wilson was a British politician and statesman. A member of the Labour Party, he served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, from 16 October, 1964 to 19 June, 1970, and again, from 4 March, 1974 to 5 April, 1976. He was also a Member of Parliament for Ormskirk, from 5 July, 1945 to 3 February, 1950, and then for Huyton, from 23 February, 1950 to 13 May, 1983; Leader of the Labour Party, from 14 February, 1963 to 5 April, 1976, and Leader of the Opposition, from 14 February, 1963 to 16 October, 1964, and again, from 19 June, 1970 to 4 March, 1974; among many other duties.
Prime Minister Wilson was born in Huddersfield, a mill town, the son of Ethel (Seddon), a schoolteacher, and James Herbert Wilson, a chemist who was Winston Churchill’s deputy election agent in a 1908 by-election. His uncle, Harold Seddon, was a politician in Australia. Prime Minister Wilson was married to poet Mary Wilson, Baroness Wilson of Rievaulx, until his death. The couple had two children.
