A shortstop, and occasionally also at first base, third base, and left field, he played for the Boston Red Sox, the Florida/Miami Marlins, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Boston Red Sox, and the Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball (MLB).
Hanley is the son of Isabela and Toribio Ramírez, an auto mechanic. His first name is a misspelling of Hamlet. He is married to Sanoe (Elisabeth), with whom he has three children. Hanley became a U.S. citizen in 2019.
