His mother is theatre actress, director, and producer Deann Simmons Halper.

Gus’s paternal grandfather is Murray Halper (the son of Emmanual/Emanuel/Manny/Manuel Halper and Anna Marcus). Murray was born in New York. Emmanual was born in New York, the son of Barnet/Barnett Halper, who was a Russian Jewish immigrant, and of Rebecca Finkelstein, who was born in England, to Russian Jewish parents. Anna was born in New York, also to Russian Jewish parents, Barnet Marcus and Ester/Esther Salz.

Gus’s paternal grandmother is Helen Aschinoff (the daughter of Irving/Izzie Aschinoff/Ashinofsky/Aschnoff and Jennie Eagle/Egel). Helen was born in New York, to Jewish emigrants.
