He is the son of Haraldur Dean “Halli” Nelson and Guðrún Hulda Gunnarsdóttir. His father’s last name is a family name, while his mother’s last name is a patronymic.

Gunnar’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to his third great-grandfather, Albert Nilsson (later Nelson), who was a Swedish immigrant.

Gunnar’s paternal grandfather was Kenneth Dean Nelson (the son of Harvey Buerkman Nelson and Clairbel “Clair” Snelling McLain). Kenneth was American, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
