Gough Whitlam was an Australian politician. He served as Prime Minister of Australia, from 5 December, 1972 to 11 November, 1975. He was Leader of the Labor Party, from 9 February, 1967 to 22 December, 1977, Leader of the Opposition, from 9 February, 1967 to 5 December, 1972, and again from 11 November, 1975 to 22 December, 1977, and Minister for Foreign Affairs, from 5 December, 1972 to 6 November, 1973, among other duties.

Prime Minister Whitlam was the son of Martha (Maddocks) and Fred Whitlam (born Harry Frederick Ernest Whitlam), who served as Australia’s Commonwealth Crown Solicitor, from 1936 to 1949.

Prime Minister Whitlam’s paternal grandfather was Henry Hugh Gough Whitlam (the son of Henry George Whitlam and Adelaide Storr). Prime Minister Whitlam’s grandfather Henry was born in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia, to English parents. Prime Minister Whitlam’s great-grandfather Henry was the son of James Whitlam and Sarah Day. Adelaide was the daughter of Anthony Storr and Harriett Jackson.

Prime Minister Whitlam’s paternal grandmother was Janet Turnbull Steele (the daughter of James Steele and Christina Lesley Turnbull).
