The ethnic groups in Northern Ireland/Ulster confuses me. Are Northern Irish a name for all people with ancestry from the region? Or does it only denote the protestants that is descended from Scottish immigrants? And is there any difference between Northern Irish and Ulster-Scots? Also, the term Scots-Irish seems to be used only for Americans. Why is this, and does it mean the same thing as Ulster-Scots? It would make a lot more sense if all these group was combined under a single label.
Francis’s paternal ancestors are from Atina, Province of Frosinone, Lazio, Italy.
“Scots-Irish” is used only for Americans because that’s the term Americans use.
Francis’ mother was Catholic, does that mean she should be labeled as just Irish instead of Northern Irish?
I guess?
Catholics in Northern Ireland are almost all of Irish ethnicity.Northern Ireland is only 100 years old.
