Esther McGregor is a British actress. She appeared on the series High School.
She is daughter of Scottish actor and director Ewan McGregor and French production designer Eve Mavrakis. Her sister is model Clara McGregor. Her paternal great-uncle is actor and director Denis Lawson. Esther was raised in her mother’s Jewish faith, and had a Bat Mitzvah ceremony.
Esther’s paternal grandfather is James Charles Stewart “Jim” McGregor (the son of James Peter McGregor and Isabella McMillan Clark McIndoe). Esther’s great-grandfather James was born in Crieff, Perthshire, the son of James W. MacGregor and Emily Cramb. Isabella’s father, Juan/John Charles McIndoe, was born in Chile, to a Scottish father, who was an engineer assisting with the construction of railways there, and to a mother who likely was of German ancestry. Isabella’s mother was Mary Forrester Clark.
Esther’s paternal grandmother is Carol Diane Lawson (the daughter of Laurence Lawson and Phyllis/Phyliss Neno Stamper). Lawrence was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, the son of Alexander Dobbie Lawson and Diana McCulloch Brown.
Esther’s maternal grandfather is named Kostas Mavrakis. Kostas is a Greek Marxist-Leninist professor, who wrote a book on Leon Trotsky in 1973.
Esther’s maternal grandmother is Annie Bensimon (the daughter of Roger Bensimon and Linda Levy). Annie is Jewish. Linda was the daughter of Léon Levy and Rahel/Rachel Lasry, who was born on Gibraltar. Rahel’s father was from Tetouan Province, Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima, Morocco; his own father was Chief Rabbi of Gibraltar, Samuel Lasry.
Esther’s father Ewan said in 2016:
I’m not a religious person… I’m married to a Jewish woman [then-wife Eve Mavrakis], so my children are Jewish and my involvement in religion has more to do with the Jewish faith now and not the Christian faith, which I was very vaguely brought up in… My parents were not religious, but my school had prayers at morning assembly… So my early understanding of religion was the Protestant faith in Scotland. But my experience is no longer that.
