Are Austrians genetically different from Germans?

    • Freerk says:

More Slavic input, depending on the region, but very similar. Central Europe is a hodge-podge of peoples.

    • vitordesouza says:

Austrians are more Slavs because of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which encompassed several Eastern European peoples

    • rafe says:

They’re still very close relatives. In tables displaying genetic distances between European groups, Austrians will have near zero distance to Germany.

That said, they have, compared to Germans, more of an affinity to Eastern and Southern Europeans. Also, 23andme once released a graph showing them to have a lower frequency of blue eyes than Germany. On this measure, they were more similar to the French.
