Elena Kagan has served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, since August 7, 2010. She was previously Dean of Harvard Law School, from July 1, 2003 to March 19, 2009, and Solicitor General of the United States, from March 19, 2009 to May 17, 2010.

Justice Kagan is the daughter of Gloria (Gittelman), who taught at a college, and Robert Kagan, an attorney. She had a Bat Mitzvah ceremony.

Justice Kagan’s paternal grandfather was Itsche/Irving Louis Kagan (the son of Zalke/Calke Cohen/Kagan and Gitel Slowies). Itsche was born in Bialystok, Poland. Calke was the son of Symche Cohen. Gitel was the daughter of Mosche/Moishe Slowies.

Justice Kagan’s paternal grandmother was Bertha Smilovitz (the daughter of Morris Smilovitz and Sophie Rubenstein). Bertha was born in New York, to parents from Russia.

Justice Kagan’s maternal grandfather was Laizar/Laizer/Leizer/Leizar B. Gittelman (the son of Boruch/Benjamin Gittelman and Schiffe/Shifra/Schifre/Shefra/Sophie Bugash). Laizar was born in Vorowitzi, Ukraine. Boruch was the son of Yehuda Leib Gittelman. Schiffe was the daughter of Szlama Bogash and Elka.
