Donald Moffat was an English-American actor. His roles included the films The Great Northfield, Minnesota Raid; The Terminal Man, Earthquake (1974), Promises in the Dark, On the Nickel, Popeye (1980), John Carpenter’s The Thing, The Right Stuff, Monster in the Closet (1986), The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Music Box, The Bonfire of the Vanities, Regarding Henry, Housesitter, Clear and Present Danger, Trapped in Paradise, The Evening Star, and Cookie’s Fortune; the series Little House on the Prairie, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, and The West Wing; the made-for-tv movies The Call of the Wild (1976) and 61*; and the mini-series The Chisholms and Tales of the City.
Donald was the son of Kathleen Mary and Walter George Moffat, an insurance agent. His father was Scottish. His mother was English. His parents ran a boarding house in Totnes. He began acting on stage in England and the U.S., eventually moving to Oregon, where he also worked as a bartender and lumberjack. Donald was married to director and actress Gwen Arner, until his death. He had two children with his former wife Anne Murray Ellsperman; and two children with Gwen.
Donald’s paternal grandfather was George Moffat (the son of Walter Mundell Moffat and Mary Mcdougall). George was born in Kelso, Scottish Borders, Scotland. Walter was the son of John R. Moffat and Janet Nichol.
