Daniel D. Tompkins was an American politician. A member of the Democratic-Republican Party, he served as Vice President of the United States, from March 4, 1817 to March 4, 1825. He was elected to the position in 1816 and 1820. He was also Associate Justice of the New York Supreme Court of Judicature, from July 2, 1804 to July 1, 1807, and Governor of New York, from July 1, 1807 to February 24, 1817.

Vice President Tompkins was the son of Sarah Ann and Jonathan Griffin Tompkins. His brother, Caleb Tompkins, was a politician, who was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York, from 1817 to 1821. He was married to Hannah Tompkins, until his death, with whom he had eight children, including politician Minthorne Tompkins.

Vice President Tompkins’ paternal grandfather was Joshua Tompkins (the son of John Tompkins and Mercy Jones). Joshua was born in New York. John was the son of John Tompkins, whose parents were English, with roots in Edlesborough, Aylesbury Vale District, Buckinghamshire; and of Mary, or Rebecca Knights. Mercy was the daughter of Ebenezer Jones and Mary A. Fuller.

Vice President Tompkins’ paternal grandmother was Sarah Anne Odgen (the daughter of John Ogden and Susannah Dunscombe). John was the son of English parents, John Ogden, who was from Bingley, West Yorkshire, and Judith Budd, who was from Felpham, Sussex. Susannah was the daughter of Daniel Dunscombe, who was born in Pembroke Parish, Bermuda, of English origin; and of Mary Tucker.

Vice President Tompkins’ maternal grandfather was named Caleb Hyatt (the son of Caleb Hyatt and Sarah). Vice President Tompkins’ grandfather Caleb was born in New York. Vice President Tompkins’ great-grandfather Caleb was the son of Caleb Hyatt, whose parents were English, with roots in Netherbury, Dorset; and of Anna Hunt.

Vice President Tompkins’ maternal grandmother was Elizabeth Bailey (the daughter of Nathaniel Bailey and Ruth Galpin). Elizabeth was born in New York. Nathaniel was the son of Nathan Bailey, whose father, and maternal grandparents, were English; and of Mary Ann Squires. Ruth was the daughter of John Galpin, whose parents were English, from Gloucestershire; and of Mary Morgan.

Vice President Tompkins was a first cousin, four times removed, of actor Oliver Hardy. Vice President Ogden’s paternal grandparents, Joshua Tompkins and Sarah Anne Odgen, were also Oliver’s maternal great-great-great-great-grandparents.
