Avigdor Lieberman is a Soviet-born Israeli politician. He has served as Minister of National Infrastructure, from 2001 to 2002, Minister of Transportation, from 2003 to 2004, Deputy Prime Minister, from 2006 to 2008, and again, from 2009 to 2012; Minister of Strategic Affairs, from 2006 to 2008, Minister of Foreign Affairs, from 2009 to 2012, and again, from 2013 to 2015; Minister of Defence, from 2016 to 2018, and Minister of Finance, from 2021 to 2022. He is the founder and leader of the secular nationalist Yisrael Beiteinu (Israel Our Home) party.
His father, Lev Lieberman, was a writer, who had served in the Red Army and spent seven years in a Siberian exile under Joseph Stalin’s rule, where he met his mother, Esther (Gitnik). Avigdor is married to fellow Moldovan Jewish emigrant, Ella Tzipkin, with whom he has three children.
Avigdor’s paternal grandfather was named Yakov Lieberman/Liberman.
Avigdor’s paternal grandmother was named Hava.
Avigdor’s maternal grandfather was Mordehai Motl Gitnik (the son of Ehuda “Idl” Gitnik and Batya Rotshtein/Rotstein).
