Arnold Rüütel is an Estonian agronomist and politician. He served as the last Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic, from 8 April, 1983, to 29 March, 1990, as well as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic (from 8 May, 1990: Supreme Council of the Republic of Estonia), from 29 March, 1990, to 5 October, 1992, and the third President of Estonia, from 8 October, 2001 to 9 October, 2006.
He is the son of Juulia Rüütel and Feodor Rüütel. He is married to folklorist and philologist Ingris Ruus, with whom he has two children.
Arnold’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to his seventh great-grandfather, Hans Rüütel.
Arnold’s paternal grandfather was Vassili Rüütel (the son of Jüri/Jegor/Georgi Rüütel and Tiiu/Lidia Laheäär). Vassili was born in Tooma, Pahavalla, Laimjala, Saaremaa. Jüri was the son of Reedik/Irodion Rüütel and Tiiu/Tatjana Treimann. Arnold’s great-grandmother Tiiu was the daughter of Magnus Laheäär and Hedi Jevdokia Salm.
Arnold’s paternal grandmother was Daria Päästel (the daughter of Ivan Päästel and Anna/Ann Mast). Ivan was the son of Laas/Leonti Päästel and Tiiu/Tatjana Lesk. Anna was the daughter of Tõnis/Dionissi Mast and Reet/Irina Maripuu.
Arnold’s maternal grandfather was Ivan Rüütel (the son of Ivan Rüütel and Maria Koel). Arnold’s great-grandfather Ivan was the son of Laas/Leonti Rüütel and Ann/Anna Pipo. Maria was the daughter of Juhan/Ivan Koel and Eva Aiamaa.
Arnold’s maternal grandmother was Jekaterina Reek (the daughter of Juhan/Ivan Reek and Mari/Maria Loo). Juhan was the son of Laas/Ilarion/Illarion Reek and An/Anna Einik. Mari was the daughter of Juhan/Ivan Loo and Ann Loo.
