Alexander Mackenzie was a Scottish-born Canadian building contractor, newspaper editor, and politician. A member of the Liberal Party, he served as the second Prime Minister of Canada, from November 7, 1873 to October 8, 1878. He was a Member of the House of Commons of Canada from Lambton, and then York East (both ON), cumulatively, from September 20, 1867 to April 17, 1892.

Prime Minister Mackenzie was born in Logierait, Perthshire, Scotland, the son of Mary Stewart (Fleming) and Alexander Mackenzie. He moved to Canada in 1842. He was married to Jane (Sym), until his death. He had three children with his late wife, Helen Neil.

Prime Minister Mackenzie’s paternal grandfather was Malcolm Mckenzie (the son of Donald Mckenzie and Elspeth/Elspet Fergusson). Malcolm was born in Perth and Kinross. Donald was the son of Colin McKenzie.

Prime Minister Mackenzie’s paternal grandmother was named Catherine McDonald.

Prime Minister Mackenzie’s maternal grandfather was named Donald Fleming.
