Alexander Lukashenko is a Belarusian politician. He has been President of Belarus, since 20 July, 1994. He is also Chairman of the Supreme State Council of the Union State, since 26 January, 2000, and Chairman of the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly, since 24 April, 2024. He was previously a Member of the Supreme Council of Belarus, from 25 August, 1991 to 20 July, 1994, where he headed the interim anti-corruption committee. He presides over what is usually seen as an authoritarian government. He has maintained state ownership of prominent industries, as well as Soviet-era symbols and remnants, including the use of the Russian language; and joined Belarus closer politically to Russia.
He is the son of Ekaterina/Catherine Trofimovna Lukashenko, who worked on the railway, in construction and a flax factory, and as a milkmaid. His biological father is unknown, as is the origin of his patronymic Grigorevich. His mother was born in Alexandria/Alieksandryja, Shklow Raion, Mogilev Voblast, Belarus, and grew up on a farm. In his early years, he was director of a sovkhoz/state farm, and part of the Soviet Border Troops and the Soviet Army.
Alexander is married to Galina Lukashenko (born Galina Rodionovna Zhelnerovich). He has two children, politician Viktor Lukashenko and businessperson Dmitry Lukashenko, with Galina; and a son, Nikolai Lukashenko, “Kolya,” with another woman. Viktor has been President of the Belarus Olympic Committee, from 26 February, 2021.
Alexander’s maternal grandfather was named Trokhym Ivanovich Lukashenko. Trokhym was born in Sobycheve, near Shostka, then Russian Empire. It has been said that he had Cossack ancestry. The Cossacks are a Slavic ethnic group in Ukraine and Russian, native to the region where Trofim was born.
