Alex Padilla is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he has been a U.S. Senator from California, since January 20, 2021. He was previously President of the Los Angeles City Council, from July 4, 2001 to January 1, 2006, and Secretary of State of California, from January 5, 2015 to January 18, 2021, among other duties. He is the first Hispanic to serve as a U.S. Senator from California.

His parents, Lupe (Gonzalez) and Santos Padilla, are from Mexico, from Chihuahua and Jalisco, respectively. He is married to Angela Monzon, with whom he has three children.
