Aiko, Princess Toshi is the only child of Naruhito, who was been Emperor of Japan, since May 1, 2019, and his wife, Masako (Owada). Under Japan’s current primogeniture system, she is not set to inherit the throne of Japan, with a male heir to be chosen.

Aiko’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced to her 52nd great-grandfather, Emperor Keitai (c. 450–534). However, descent prior to Keitai is unclear to modern historians, but is traditionally traced back patrilineally to Emperor Jimmu.

Aiko’s paternal grandfather is Akihito (the son of Hirohito and Princess Nagako, of Kuni). Akihito was born at Tokyo Imperial Palace, Tokyo City, Tokyo Prefecture, Japan, and was Emperor of Japan, from January 7, 1989 to April 30, 2019. Hirohito was born at Tōgū Palace, Aoyama, Tokyo, and was Emperor of Japan, from December 25, 1926 to January 7, 1989. He was the son of Yoshihito, Emperor Taishō, who was Emperor of Japan, from July 30, 1912 to December 25, 1926; and of Lady Sadako Kujō. Nagako was the daughter of Kuniyoshi, 2nd Imperial Prince Kuni, and of Princess Chikako Shimazu.

Aiko’s paternal grandmother is Empress Michiko (born Michiko Shōda, the daughter of Hidesaburō Shōda and Fumiko Soejima). Michiko was born in University of Tokyo Hospital. Hidesaburō was born in Tatebayashi Town, Ōra District, Japan. He was a businessperson, who was president, and later honorary chairman, of Nisshin Seifun Group, Japan’s largest flour milling company. Hidesaburō was the son of Teiichirō Shōda and Kinu Shōda. Aiko’s great-grandmother Fumiko was the daughter of Tsunatake Soejima and Aya Soejima.

Aiko’s maternal grandfather is Hisashi Owada (the son of Takeo Owada and Shizuka Tamura). Hisashi was born in Shibata, Niigata, Japan, and is a diplomat and law professor, who served as Judge of the International Court of Justice, from 6 February, 2003 to 7 June, 2018, and President of the International Court of Justice, from 6 February, 2009 to 5 February, 2012. Takeo was the son of Kaneyoshi Owada and Takeno Koga. Shizuka was the daughter of Matashirō Tamura and Taka.

Aiko’s maternal grandmother is Yumiko Egashira (the daughter of Yutaka Egashira and Suzuko Yamaya). Yutaka was the son of Yasutarō Egashira and Yoneko Koga. Suzuko was the daughter of Tanin Yamaya and Sadako Niwa.
