Sherman Hemsley was an American actor. He was known for starring as George Jefferson on All in the Family and The Jeffersons, and for his roles on the series Amen, Dinosaurs, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

He was raised by his mother, Arsenia, who worked in a lamp factory.

Sherman’s maternal grandmother was Mary L. Hatch (the daughter of John Hatch and Pauline Williams). Mary was born in Pennsylvania. Pauline was the daughter of Hiram Williams and Isabella Smith.
