John Carpenter is an American filmmaker, screenwriter, and composer. He directed the legendary horror film Halloween (1978), which he also co-wrote. His other films, among them many classics of genre filmmaking, are Dark Star, Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), The Fog (1980), Escape from New York, The Thing (1982), Christine, Starman, Big Trouble in Little China, Prince of Darkness, They Live, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, In the Mouth of Madness, Village of the Damned (1995), Escape from L.A., Vampires, Ghosts of Mars, and The Ward. Since 2001, he has focused on his music career. He has also been billed as John T. Chance and Martin Quatermass.

John was born in Carthage, in upstate New York, the son of Milton Jean (Carter), from Missouri, and Howard Ralph Carpenter, a music professor, who had been born in Natural Bridge, New York. His family moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky in 1953, where his father worked.

John is married to producer Sandy King. He has a son, Cody, with his former wife, actress Adrienne Barbeau.

John’s paternal grandfather was Clinton Charles Carpenter (the son of Lafayette/La Fayette Carpenter and Caroline/Carline Schloop/Sloupe/Slupe/Schlupe). Clinton was born in New York. Lafayette was the son of Sylvester Carpenter and Jerusha Tooley, who were from Vermont. Caroline was the daughter of Swiss-German parents, Benedict Schloop and Mary Mathys.

John’s paternal grandmother was Sophie Ruth Chaffee (the daughter of Lewis Roselle/Rosell Chaffee and Mary Louisa Otis). Sophie was born in New York. Her parents operated a farm at Castorland. Lewis was the son of Ira V. Chaffee and Eliza Brown. Mary Louisa was the daughter of John Graham Otis, Jr., whose mother was English, from Cumberland, and of Jerusha M. Thompson.

John’s maternal grandfather was Milton Graves Carter (the son of Frederick Cassander Carter and Eliza E. Graves). Milton was born in New York. Frederick was the son of Asa Barnes Carter and Sheloma Thompson. John’s great-grandmother Eliza was the daughter of Elijah Graves and Lurinda Tappon.

John’s maternal grandmother was Elsie Baldwin (the daughter of Thomas Andrew Baldwin and Matilda Dian MacKenzie). Elsie was born in Missouri. Matilda was the daughter of John Baptist McKenzie and Matilda Logue.

    He seems to be 1/8th German or Swiss German through Benedict Schloop and Mary Mathys, the rest is basically British Isles stock (primarily English). Not everything is finished but, it looks like the missing parts of his tree are British Isles stock purely by the last name.
