Barry’s paternal grandfather was Benjamin Nathaniel Livingston (the son of Louis Livingston and Sarah Y. Schragus). Benjamin was born in Durham, North Carolina, to Russian Jewish parents.
Barry’s paternal grandmother was named Bertha Mogulevski (the daughter of Phillip Mogulevski and Ethel). Bertha was a Russian Jewish immigrant.

I think he’s not Serbian, but Croatian and that this is Agnes’ Husband:

He died in 1931, which is why he’s not on 1940 census
Sure, why not?
What do you think of John Kasich? Is he Rusyn?
Most likely. I read Smolenyak’s article, and if he by any chance wasn’t Rusyn, he was at least a plain ol’ Ukrainian. Not Czech for sure.
There’s also a Franjo Palias from Sveti Martin listed on a passenger list in Ellis Island in 1905:

Might be the same man
Why wouldn’t his mother be Jewish as well?
In a sense, that’s a difficult question to answer. Many people simply aren’t Jewish, and it’s usually hard to pinpoint a reason. You could also ask, why is someone male or female? We don’t know. It just happens.
Still, it isn’t that unusual: researchers estimate that there may be as many as over 7.3 billion non-Jewish people in the world right now, although, to be fair, the number was significantly smaller when Barry was born, and even smaller when his mother was born.

Why is his mother female?
