Woodrow Wilson was an American politician and academic. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 28th President of the United States, from March 4, 1913 to March 4, 1921. He was elected to the position in 1912 and 1916. He was previously President of Princeton University, from 1902 to 1910, and Governor of New Jersey, from January 17, 1911 to March 1, 1913.

President Wilson’s father, Joseph Ruggles Wilson, was a Presbyterian theologician, who was born in Steubenville, Jefferson, Ohio, to Scots-Irish, Protestant, emigrants from Strabane, County Tyrone, Ireland. President Wilson’s mother was born Jessie Janet Woodrow, in Carlisle, Cumberland, England, to Scottish parents, her father from Paisley, Renfrewshire, and her mother from Glasgow, Lanarkshire.

All eight of President Wilson’s great-grandparents were born outside of the United States, a rarity among American Presidents.

He was married to Edith (Bolling), and, previously, until her death, to Ellen Louise (Axson), with whom he had three children.

President Wilson’s paternal grandfather was named James Wilson (the son of Robert Wilson). President Wilson’s grandfather James was born in Dergalt, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. He published The Western Herald and Gazette, a pro-tariff and anti-slavery newspaper.

President Wilson’s paternal grandmother was named Mary Anne/Ann Adams. President Wilson’s grandmother Mary Anne was born in Londonderry, County Antrim.

President Wilson’s maternal grandfather was The Rev. Thomas Woodrow (the son of John Wodrow/Woodrow and Janet Morton). The Rev. Thomas was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and was a Presbyterian minister. John was the son of John Wodrow/Woodrow and Jean Slater/Sclatters.

President Wilson’s maternal grandmother was Marion Williamson (the daughter of Robert Williamson and Marion/Marian Wright). President Wilson’s grandmother Marion was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
