Birth Name: Tiffany Sara Cornilia Haddish

Place of Birth: Los Angeles, California, United States

Date of Birth: December 3, 1979

*Eritrean Jewish (father)
*African-American (mother)

Tiffany Haddish is an American stand-up comedian, actress, and author. She has starred in the films Keanu, Girls Trip, The Oath, Night School (2018), The Kitchen (2019), Bad Trip, The Card Counter, and Haunted Mansion (2023), and the series The Carmichael Show and The Last O.G., and has hosted Kids Say the Darndest Things, among many other works.

Her father, Tsihaye Reda Haddish, was Eritrean, a country that was once part of Ethiopia; he was an Eritrean Jew. Her mother, Leola (Wright), is American (African-American), and of the Jehovah’s Witness religion. Pictures of Tiffany with her father can be seen here and here.

A popular line in Tiffany’s biographies states that she is “as sexy as Halle Berry, as funny as Jim Carrey, raw like Richard Pryor with the comedic timing of Lucille Ball, smooth like Eddie Murphy, Jewish as Whoopi Goldberg, and hopes to someday have money like Oprah.” [Whoopi Goldberg is not actually Jewish]

Tiffany became a naturalized citizen of Eritrea on May 22, 2019, in a ceremony in the country.

As an adult, Tiffany became a practicing Jew. In 2019, re-connecting with her Jewish heritage, she had a formal Bat Mizvah ceremony. It was officiated by Rabbi Susan Silverman, the sister of comedian Sarah Silverman. Tiffany stated:

I’m Jewish by DNA… And because of my father, I want to honor him and our ancestors, and I want to do something that represents growth and maturity. And I want to teach. That’s what I’ve been put on this planet to do is teach, and Judaism is all about that.

The funny thing is there are like 10 different articles in the Hebrew Wikipedia about Ethiopian Jews and each of their subgroups (Beta Israel/Falasha/etc) who mostly live in Israel by now, though several thousands of them still remain in Ethiopia to this day.

Either way, there isn’t a single article in the Hebrew Wikipedia about Eritrean Jews whatsoever.
For all we know, Eritrea is country with like a 50% Christian-50% Muslim citizens, who has nothing to do Judaism, especially after its independence from Ethiopia.

In mya educated opinion, her Eritrean-born father ethnicity’s is either Ethiopian-Jewish or fake.

I agree there’s not as much info on Eritrean Jews. But there is articles on the history of Jews and synagogues in Eritrea since it was part of Ethiopia. If you go on some cites on Aliyah to Israel. It would put Jews from Ethiopia and Eritrea in the same category. She claimed that she has Hebrew ancestry from her DNA ancestry results. Yet, I don’t think Hebrew would appear in the results. I would think Jewish subgroups like Sephardic, Ashkenazi etc. However, I’m not sure what Ethiopian Jews DNA ancestry results would look like.

According to this, Ethiopian Jews’s DNA is only similar to local non-Jewish African populations.
That’s why before exercising the BirthRight Citienship Law and getting them all to Israel, the Israeli authorities decided to make an extended research about their faith of Judaism instead of their obscure ancestry. In the end, the vast majority of them were rescued by Israel.
Although, many of them had to convert to Judaism upon arrival.

@follers: Please read my previous comments above.

In the meantime, at least change her profile above as such: Ethnicity: *father: Ethiopian-Jewish (from Eritrea).

This is according to her Wikipedia’s Early life.

There are no Ethopian Jews in Israel who have delcared that their ancestors are either Eritrean or Eritrean-Jewish.

Ethiopian Jews are descended from ancient Hebrews who moved to Africa and married Africans, while Ashkenazi Jews are descended from Hebrews who moved to Europe. So if you have Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, yes, you’re related.

    • follers says:

Yes, she does. Ethiopian Jews have an interesting look.

The Hebrews weren’t “white,” Caucasian most likely, but they wouldn’t be very similar looking to someone from Sweden. If you take the word of the bible as being accurate, Abraham was from Iraq. There’s several theories who the Hebrew people really were, lots ideas are that they were foreign to the area they eventually settled in, but they were most likely just a Canaanite tribe, and probably looked like their neighbors.
