Avery Brooks is an American actor, director, singer, narrator, and educator. His roles include the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Spenser: For Hire, and A Man Called Hawk, and the film American History X.

Avery is the son of Eva Lydia Crawford, a chorale conductor and music instructor, and Samuel Brooks, a tool and die worker, who was a union official. He is married to assistant dean Vicki Bowen, with whom he has three children.

Avery’s maternal grandfather was Samuel Travis/Traverse Crawford, a singer (the son of Samuel Crawford and Fannie Rush). Travis was born in Mississippi.

Avery’s maternal grandmother was Eva Roberts (the daughter of Robert Louis/Lewis Roberts and Rosa Bell/Rosebelle Chatman). Eva was born in Mississippi.
