Ariel Sharon was an Israeli general and politician. He was the 11th Prime Minister of Israel, from March 7, 2001 to January 4, 2006.

He was previously Minister of Defense, from August 5, 1981 to February 14, 1983, Minister of Industry, Trade and Labour, from September 13, 1984 to February 20, 1990, Minister of Housing and Construction, from June 11, 1990 to July 13, 1992, Minister of Energy and Water Resources, from July 8, 1996 to July 6, 1999, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, from October 13, 1998 to June 6, 1999.

Prime Minister Sharon was the son of Dvora/Vera (Shneurov) and Shmuel Sheinerman. His parents were Jewish immigrants, his father from Brest-Litovsk, Belarus, and his mother from Hałavienčycy, Belarus.

Prime Minister Sharon’s mother has been described on the internet as having been of Subbotnik descent (the Subbotniks were ethnic Russians who converted to Judaism). It is not clear if this is accurate. Available information on his maternal grandparents, including their surname, Shneirov, does not appear to support this statement.

Prime Minister Sharon had three children, one with his first wife Margalit Zimmerman, and two with his second wife Lily Zimmerman. Margalit and Lily were sisters, and he married Lily after Margalit’s death.

Prime Minister Sharon’s paternal grandfather was Mordechai Sheinerman (the son of Moshe Sheinerman and Frida Gittel Puchachever). Frida was the daughter of Shimon Puchachever and Malka.

Prime Minister Sharon’s paternal grandmother was named Bluma.

Prime Minister Sharon’s maternal grandparents were named Mordehai/Mark Shneirov/Shneerov and Slava. Mordehai was born in Hałavienčycy, Belarus.
