Samuel J. Tilden was an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as Governor of New York, from January 1, 1875 to December 31, 1876. He was also Chair of the New York Democratic Party, from August 1866 to September 1874, among other duties.

Samuel was the Democratic Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1876. He won a majority of the popular vote, while losing the Electoral College.

Samuel was the son of Polly Younglove (Jones) and Elam Tilden. His family were makers of Tilden’s Extract, a patent medicine, derived from cannabis. His father was politically active. Samuel was of Colonial American (English) descent.

Samuel’s paternal grandfather was John Tilden (the son of Isaac Tilden and Rebecca Mann). John was born in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut. Isaac was the son of Stephen Tilden, who was born in Tenterden, Ashford Borough, Kent, England, and of Hannah Little, whose parents were English, her father from Gnosall, Staffordshire and her mother from Shoreditch, Middlesex. Rebecca was the daughter of Richard Mann/Man, whose father was born in Kent, England, and of Elizabeth Sutton.

Samuel’s paternal grandmother was Bathsheba Janes (the daughter of Elisha Janes and Mary Bayley). Bathsheba was born in Coventry, Tolland, Connecticut. Elisha was the son of Benjamin Janes and Hannah Hinsdale.

Samuel’s maternal grandfather was Samuel Jones (the son of Caleb Jones and Mary Frisbie). Samuel was born in Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut. Caleb was the son of Theophilus Jones and Hannah Mix. Mary was the daughter of Ebenezer Frisbie and Mary Harrington.

Samuel’s maternal grandmother was Parthenia Patterson (the daughter of Josiah Patterson and Phebe Wells). Parthenia was born in Cornwall, Litchfield, Connecticut. Josiah was the son of John Patterson and Mary Curtiss.

Samuel was a third cousin, six times removed, of actress Jennifer Coolidge. Samuel’s great-great-grandparents, Stephen Tilden and Hannah Little, were also Jennifer’s paternal eight times great-grandparents.
