Salman has been King of Saudi Arabia, since 23 January, 2015, and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, from 23 January, 2015 to 27 September, 2022. He was previously Governor of Riyadh Province, from 18 April, 1956 to 22 September, 1960, and again, from 5 February, 1963 to 5 November, 2011; Minister of Defense, from 5 November, 2011 to 23 January, 2015, and Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, and Deputy Prime Minister, both, from 18 June, 2012 to 23 January, 2015. He is of the House of Al Saud.

He is the son of Hassa/Hussa bint Ahmed Al Sudairi and Ibn Saud, who was the founder of Saudi Arabia and the House of Saud, and its first monarch; he was King of Saudi Arabia, from 23 September, 1932 to 9 November, 1953. Salman succeeded his half-brother Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, who was King, from 1 August, 2005 to 23 January, 2015, upon his death. Four of his other siblings have also been Kings of Saudi Arabia, Saud of Saudi Arabia, from 9 November, 1953 to 2 November, 1964, his forced abdication; Faisal of Saudi Arabia, from 2 November, 1964 to 25 March, 1975, his assassination; Khalid of Saudi Arabia, from 25 March, 1975 to 13 June, 1982; and Fahd of Saudi Arabia, from 13 June, 1982 to 1 August, 2005. Saud, Faisal, Khalid, Fahd, and Abdullah have also all been Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia. All were his half-siblings, except for Salman, who shared the same mother, Hassa.

Salman is married to Fahda bint Falah Al Hithlain. He has also been married to Sultana bint Turki Al Sudairi, until her death; and to Sarah bint Faisal Al Subai’ai. Sultana was his first cousin, the daughter of his uncle Turki bin Ahmad Al Sudairi, a governor of Asir Province. Fahda is the granddaughter of Rakan bin Hithlain, and the great-granddaughter of Dhaydan bin Hithlain, both leaders of the Al Ajman tribe. He has had at least thirteen children, six with Sultana; a son with Sarah; and six, including Mohammed bin Salman, with Fahda. Mohammed has been Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, since 21 June, 2017, and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, since 27 September, 2022.

Salman’s patrilineal great-great-great-grandfather, Prince Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Saud Al Saud, was born in Diriyah, Sheikhdom of Diriyah, and is regarded as the founder of the First Saudi State.

Salman’s paternal grandfather was Abdul Rahman bin Faisal Al Saud (the son of Faisal bin Turki bin Abdullah Al Saud and Sarah bint Mishari bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan Al Saud). Abdul was Emir of Nejd, from 1875 to 1876, and again, from 1889 to 1891. Salman’s great-grandfather Faisal was Emir of Nejd, from 1834 to 1838, and again, from 1843 to 1865. He was the son of Turki bin Abdullah bin Muhammad Al Saud, who was Emir of Nejd, from 1819 to 1820, and again, from 1824 to 9 May, 1834; and of Hia bint Hamad bin Ali Al Faqih Angari Tamimi. Salman’s great-grandmother Sarah was the daughter of Mishari ibn Abdul-Rahman.

Salman’s paternal grandmother was Sarah/Sara bint Ahmed bin Muhammad bin Turki bin Suleiman Al Sudairi (the daughter of Ahmed Al Kabir bin Mohammed/Muhammad bin Turki Al Sudairi and Hessa bint Muhanna bin Saleh Al Nuwairan). Ahmed was the son of Mohammed bin Turki bin Suleiman Al Sudairi.

Salman’s maternal grandfather was named Ahmed bin Muhammed Al Sudairi (the son of Muhammed bin Ahmed Al Kabir Al Sudairi). Muhammed was the son of Ahmed Al Kabir bin Mohammed bin Turki Al Sudairi.

Salman’s maternal grandmother was named Sharifa bint Ali bin Mohammed Al Suwaidi (the daughter of Ali bin Mohammed Al Suwaidi). Ali was the son of Mohammed Al Suwaidi.

Through Ahmed Al Kabir bin Mohammed bin Turki Al Sudairi, Salman’s parents were second cousins, once removed.
