Raúl Alfonsín was an Argentinian lawyer, politician, and statesman. A member of the Radical Civic Union, he served as President of Argentina, from 10 December, 1983 to 8 July, 1989, among other duties.
President Alfonsín was the son of Ana Maria (Foulkes) and Serafín Raúl Alfonsín Ochoa. His son is lawyer, academic, and politician Ricardo Alfonsín.
President Alfonsín’s paternal grandfather was a Galician Spanish immigrant. His maternal grandfather had British Isles (Welsh, English, and Scottish) ancestry. The rest of President Alfonsín’s ancestry was one quarter Basque and one quarter Argentinian/Spanish.
President Alfonsín was also said to have German ancestry, through his father. It is not clear if this is accurate.
