Ramsey Clark was an American lawyer, activist, and federal government official. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as U.S. Deputy Attorney General, from January 28, 1965 to March 10, 1967, and U.S. Attorney General, from November 28, 1966 to January 20, 1969 (in an Acting capacity from November 28, 1966 to March 10, 1967). He was also U.S. Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division, from 1961 to 1965.
He received convention votes for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1972.
Ramsey was the son of Mary Jane (Ramsey) and Tom C. Clark (Thomas Campbell Clark), a lawyer. His father was also U.S. Attorney General, from June 27, 1945 to July 26, 1949, and an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, from August 19, 1949 to June 12, 1967. Ramsey was married to Georgia Welch, until her death, with whom he had two children.
Ramsey’s paternal grandfather was William Henry Clark (the son of William Henry Clark and Mary J. McDowell). Ramsey’s grandfather William was a lawyer, who was the youngest man then elected president of the Texas Bar Association. Ramsey’s great-grandfather William was the son of Gen. William Henry Clark, who was a gospel preacher, and of Louisa Pearce Lanier. Ramsey’s great-grandmother Mary J. was the daughter of Joseph McDowell and Anne Bush.
Ramsey’s paternal grandmother was Virginia Maxey “Jennie” Falls (the daughter of Absalom/Absolom Theopolis Falls and Sarah Elizabeth “Bettie” Maxey). Virginia was born in Mississippi. Sarah was the daughter of Robert M. Maxey and Harriet Virginia Shelton.
Ramsey’s maternal grandfather was William F. Ramsey (William Franklin Ramsey, the son of John J. Ramsey and Nancy Clark). William was born in Texas, and was a lawyer, judge, and banker, who was a Justice of the Texas Supreme Court, from January 1911 to April 1912.
Ramsey’s maternal grandmother was Rowena Benton Hill (the daughter of Malcolm Henry Hill and Mary Janet “Mary Jane” Knox). Rowena was born in Texas. Malcolm was the son of Thomas Alexander Hill and Nancy Henry. Mary Janet was the daughter of James Knox and Hannah “Nancy” Mills.
