Birth Name: Nina Kamenova Dobreva

Place of Birth: Sofia, People’s Republic of Bulgaria (now Bulgaria)

Date of Birth: January 9, 1989

Ethnicity: Bulgarian

Nina Dobrev is a Canadian actress and model. She is known for starring on the series The Vampire Diaries, and in the films Dog Days, The Final Girls, and Run This Town.

Nina was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, to Bulgarian parents, Michaela (Radeva) and Konstantin Dobrev. When she was two, her family moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where she was raised. She is fluent in English, French, and Bulgarian.

A picture of Nina with her father can be seen here. A picture of Nina with her mother and brother can be seen here.

Nina once stated “I’m a Gypsy, what can I say…” It is not clear if she was referring to being of the Romani ethnic group, or to the term “gypsy” as it is sometimes used to refer to lifestyle habits. It appears that Nina often refers to herself as a “gypsy” in this latter way.

Two of Nina’s grandparents are named Aleksandr and Efi.

  2. JasonBaker says:

    Hazel eyes are like light brown, right? I don´t think her eyes are light brown, they´re just brown [and beautiful] IMO.

    • J.J. says:

      correction; correct hazel eyes are usually a light brown however it can also be a red-ish brown as a hazelnut can be either a golden brown or red-ish brown, hence why I said her eyes are hazel without adding the light brown in brackets

      • Alice says:

        None of these people actually have hazel eyes. They are all brown eyed. Light brown eyes are not classified as hazel. The eye colour hazel is actually a brown/gold/green combination. Look up any definition of hazel eye colour and it is not mid brown or light brown eyes. It is a combination eye colour. I think the colour that J.J. says is forest green is actually hazel. All these brown eyed people do not have hazel eyes.

        a light golden- or greenish-brown color.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_color

        of eyes: of a variable color averaging light greenish-grayish brown
        http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hazel

        • J.J. says:

          correction; hazel is not meant to be green with gold and brown and grey or a mixture of colours, it’s just a light honey brown resembling that of a hazelnut, some websites will say the ‘colour’ hazel is light brown but ‘hazel eyes’ are a green-ish brown but it’s a load of crap, hazel eyes are meant to be the actual colour ‘hazel’ but somehow people have started misusing it to identify multi-coloured eyes, unfortunately no ones done an actual study on this matter but there are many blogs with people stating what hazel truly is and how Europeans will use the term correctly but north americans and areas exposed to Americanisation have started misusing the term hazel. Research hazel eye misconception and you’ll get your answer, and if you look at blogs about hazel eyes from the UK or other parts of Europe they’ll identify hazel eyes correctly like this one;
          http://blackeyesincolor.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/famous-people.html
          and if you’ll look on the Wikipedia eye colour talk page people have tried numerous times to get Wikipedia to change the hazel eye section to saying hazel eyes are supposed to resemble a hazelnut rather than the small line they’ve put in the section sating that hazel is ‘sometimes’ considered synonymous with light brown or gold as in the colour of a hazelnut shell;
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Eye_color
          however since Wikipedia is an American website they’re bias with the information they put.
          The first reference to eyes being compared tot he colour hazel was by Shakespeare (a European) where he compared a woman’s eyes to the reddish brown colour of a ripe hazelnut. I mean there not much more I can say on this matter it requires common sense to understand that hazel being used to describe multi-coloured eyes is an obvious misconception as a hazelnut is just brown and the colour ‘hazel’ refers to the colouration of such.

        • J.J. says:

          alice both those dictionary definitions do describe hazel to be a light brown and/or yellowish brown or strong yellowish brown as in the colour of a hazelnut shell and the Wikipedia eye colour page does state hazel can be considered synonymous with light brown or gold as in the colour of a hazelnut shell; which is the true/original European definition

      • J.J. says:

        and yes smiley I will agree with you on this one, I acted to quickly identifying her eyes as hazel, they’re too dark to be hazel so yes I would classify them as a generic brown

  3. J.J. says:

    correction; her eyes are hazel and her hair is dark brown (brunette)

  4. ectag says:

    The American (i.e. US) left are the ones who have promoted this idea that white = pale/Nordic. For very different reasons, the far left and racist far right (as in skinhead) have a similarly restrcted, revisionist view of ” white”. The far left likes to limit ‘white’ to pale blondes because the more people are considered non-white the bigger their perceived political base is. Neo-Nazis do the same thing, but out of the idea that pale ‘nordics’ are superior to darker whites.

    The difference is that skinheads are a tiny cultish fringe whereas the far left types, though small in number, weild considerable influence in academia and media and hence on the culture at large.

    The idea that a tan brunette like Nina isn’t white is so nuts it would make Hitler blush. Most whites have brown hair and eyes and are swarthy compared with people from the British Isles and Scandinavia, who are in fact the palest people in Europe and not representative of s typical Caucasian. That is a nordocentric or anglocentric view of whiteness. It’s like saying Vietnamese aren’t Oriental because they are darker than Japanese, or Xhosa aren’t black because they aren’t as dark as equatorial Africans. It’s ridiculous.

    • andrew says:

      Left has no interest in this topic. There is no such thing as “typical caucasian” and people from Scandinavia (North Europeans) are different from the ones of British isles (Western Europeans). The first has a small homogenous population because of hard climate conditions, the second (England in particular) is over populated and heterogeneous in phenotypes
