Michael Manley was a Jamaican politician. He served as Prime Minister of Jamaica, from 2 March, 1972 to 1 November, 1980, and again, from 10 February, 1989 to 30 January, 1992. He was also Leader of the Opposition, 1969 to 2 March, 1972, and again, from 1 November, 1980 to 10 February, 1989.
Michael was the son of artist Edna Manley (born Edna Swithenbank) and statesman Norman Manley (Norman Washington Manley). His father was Chief Minister of Jamaica, from 2 February, 1955 to 1959, and the 1st Premier of Jamaica, from 14 August, 1959 to 29 April, 1962. His mother was one of the most important artists and arts educators in Jamaica. She was born in Bournemouth, England.
Michael was married to Glynne Ewart, until his death. Michael had five children from his marriages, including writer Rachel Manley.
Michael’s parents were first cousins; Michael’s grandmothers, Margaret Ann Shearer and Ellie Shearer, were sisters.
Michael’s paternal grandfather was Thomas Albert Samuel Manley (the son of Samuel Manley and Esther Anderson Stone). Thomas was born in Porus, Manchester Parish, Jamaica. Michael’s great-grandfather Samuel was English. Esther was a black slave.
Michael’s paternal grandmother was Margaret Ann Shearer (the daughter of Alexander Shearer and Ann Taylor). Alexander was born in Scotland, the son of James Shearer and Isabel Anderson. Ann was said to be black/mixed race.
Michael’s maternal grandfather was The Rev. Harvey Swithenbank. The Rev. Harvey was English.
Michael’s maternal grandmother was Ellie Shearer (the daughter of Alexander Shearer and Ann Taylor). Alexander was born in Scotland, the son of James Shearer and Isabel Anderson. Ann was said to be black/mixed race.
Michael was a half-first cousin, once removed, twice over, of Alexander Bustamante, who was also Prime Minister of Jamaica, from 6 August, 1962 to 23 February, 1967. Michael’s great-grandmother, Ann Taylor, twice over, was also Alexander’s paternal grandmother.
