Mahmoud Abbas, also known as “Abu Mazen,” is a Palestinian politician. He has been President of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), since 15 January, 2005, and President of Palestine, since 8 May, 2005, as well as, Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority, from 19 March, 2003 to 6 September, 2003, and Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), since 29 October, 2004. He is based in Ramallah, West Bank.

His family left for Syria during the 1948 Israeli-Palestinian war. He attended university in Damascus, before living in Egypt. Mahmoud is married to Amina Abbas, with whom he has three children, including multi-millionaire Palestinian-Canadian businessperson Yasser Abbas.

Mahmoud is a Muslim.
