Magnus Carlsen is a Norwegian chess grandmaster. He has been a five-time World Chess Champion, and is the World Rapid Chess Champion, World Blitz Chess Champion, and Chess World Cup Champion. His peak classical rating of 2882 is the highest in history. He holds the record for the longest consectuunbeaten streak at an elite level in classical chess, and the No. 1 position in the FIDE world chess rankings.

He is the son of Sigrun (Øen), a chemical engineer, and Henrik Albert Carlsen, an IT consultant. He was raised mostly in Lommedalen, Bærum, and in Haslum.

Magnus’ paternal grandfather is Kurt Magnus Carlsen (the son of Albert Herman Carlsen/Vaagene and Birta Nilsdotter Ølmheim). Albert was the son of Carl Mathias Hansson Merkesvik and Marie Andrea Andersdotter Nordal. Birta was the daughter of Nils Johannesson Ølmheim and Margreta Eiriksdotter Midttun.

Magnus’ paternal grandmother is surnamed Lien.

Magnus’ maternal grandfather is named Nils Sverre Øen (the son of Jon Øen). Nils was born in Egersund, Rogaland. Jon was the son of Nils Kristiansen Øen and Elida Bertine Torstensdatter Førnes.

Magnus’ maternal grandmother is Berit Bakketun (the daughter of Sven Olafsen Huatorp, later Bakketun, and of Olga Arnesdatter Bjerke). Sven was the son of Olaf Kristiansen Huatorp and Gina Larsdatter Myren. Olga was the daughter of Arne Petersen Bjerke and Olea Larsdatter Iversgarden.
