Kitty Carlisle was an American stage and screen actress, singer, television personality, and spokesperson for the arts. She was also known as Kitty Carlisle Hart.
Kitty was the son of Hortense (Holtzman) and Joseph Conn, MD, a gynecologist. She was of German Jewish descent. Kitty was married to playwright and theatre director Moss Hart, until his death, with whom she had two children. Moss was also Jewish.
Kitty’s paternal grandfather was Abraham Cohn (the son of Meyer Cohn/Kohn and Sophie Simonsfeld). Abraham was born in Bavaria, Germany. Meyer was the son of Josef Cohn/Kohn and Koehla-Caroline.
Kitty’s paternal grandmother was named Fanny A. Vollmer. Fanny was born in Geinsheim, Palatinate, Bavaria.
Kitty’s maternal grandfather was named Benjamin “Ben” Holzman. Benjamin was born in Germany, and was Mayor of Shreveport, Louisiana. He was a Confederate veteran of the American Civil War, and was a gunner on the CSS Virginia, the ironclad warship that fought at the Battle of Hampton Roads.
Kitty’s maternal grandmother was Stella Baer (the daughter of Marx Baer and Mariane/Mary Dreyfus). Stella was born in Louisiana, to parents from Baden, Bavaria, Germany.
