Janet Mills is an American politician and lawyer. A member of the Democratic Party, she has served as Governor of Maine, since January 2, 2019. She has also been District Attorney of Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford Counties, from 1980 to January 1995, and Attorney General of Maine, from January 6, 2009 to January 6, 2011, and again, from January 7, 2013 to January 2, 2019.

Janet is the daughter of Katherine Louise (Coffin), a schoolteacher, and S. Peter Mills, Jr. (Sumner Peter Mills, Jr.), a Republican Party politician and attorney, who was U.S. Attorney for the District of Maine, from August 17, 1953 to January 20, 1961, and again, from September 1969 to January 20, 1977. Her brother is politician Peter Mills (Sumner Peter Mills III). Janet was married to real estate developer Stanley Kuklinski, until his death.

She is of predominantly Colonial American (English) descent.

Janet’s paternal grandfather was Sumner Peter Mills (the son of Peter Hunter Mills and Margaret Ann Hamblen). Sumner was born on Deer Isle, Hancock, Maine. Peter was born in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada, the son of Amos Mills and Rosanna L. Hunter. Margaret was the daughter of Walter Butler Hamblen and Elizabeth S. Thurston.

Janet’s paternal grandmother was Flora Alice Pearson (the daughter of William Henry Pearson and Mahala Ramsdell Tufts). Flora was born in Maine. William was the son of Capt. David Pearson, Jr., whose father was born in Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland, England, and of Mary Wilson. Mahala was the daughter of Capt. Peter Parker Tufts and Angeline Corbett Ramsdell.

Janet’s maternal grandfather was Lawrence/Laurence Smith Coffin (the son of Lewis C. Coffin and Evaline L. “Eva” Smith). Lawrence was born in Maine.

Janet’s maternal grandmother was Katherine Morrell Trafton (the daughter of Charles Alpheus Trafton and Louise Rowe). Katherine was born in Maine. Charles was the son of Eben Pease Trafton and Lucinda Ellis.
