Janet Gaynor was an American actress and painter. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress, a shared prize for 7th Heaven (1927), Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927), and Street Angel (1928).

She was the daughter of Laura J. (Buhl) and Frank De Witt Gainor.

Janet’s paternal grandparents were John Warrington Gainer (the son of Michael Gainer and Ellen) and Maria Louise. Michael and Ellen were Irish immigrants. Maria Louise’s father was English.

Janet’s maternal grandparents were Maximillian Buhl and Rose Miller. Maximillian was born in Württemberg, Germany. Rose was born in Baden, Germany.
