Itamar Franco was a Brazilian politician. A member of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party, he served as President of Brazil, from 29 December, 1992 to 31 December, 1994. He was also Vice President of Brazil, from 15 March, 1990 to 29 December, 1992, and Governor of Minas Gerais, from 1 January, 1999 to 1 January, 2003, among other duties.
He was born on a ship traveling between Salvador and Rio de Janeiro. President Franco was the son of Italia (Cautiero) and Augusto César Stiebler Franco. His father was born in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil, to a Brazilian father and a German mother. His mother was born in Taruaçu, Minas Gerais, to Italian parents, from Venice. President Franco had two children with his former wife Ana Elisa Surerus.
President Franco’s paternal grandfather was Archimedes Pedreira Franco (the son of Atabalipa Gê Acaiaba Americano da Luz Franco and Amélia Pires Pedreira da Fonseca). Archimedes was born in Santo Estêvão, Santo Estêvão, Bahia. Atabalipa was the son of Joaquim Arthur Pedreira Franco.
President Franco’s paternal grandmother was Mathilde Stiebler (the daughter of Karl Adolpho Frederico Stiebler and Marie Henriette Stephane). Mathilde was born in Hamburg, Germany.
