She is the daughter of Cheryl (Domasin), an interior designer, and Peter Steinfeld, a personal trainer.

Her father is originally from a family from New York, and is Ashkenazi Jewish. Hailee’s uncle is fitness specialist and entrepreneur Jake Steinfeld. Hailee’s mother was born in California. Hailee’s maternal grandfather was of half Filipino [Boholano] and half African-American descent. Hailee’s maternal grandmother had English, German, Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, and Scottish ancestry. A picture of Hailee with her parents and brother can be seen here.

Hailee was raised in Agoura Hills and then Thousand Oaks, California. She is a first cousin of actress and model True O’Brien.

Hailee has stated:

I’ve become more aware of my roots over the years. My grandfather, my mom’s dad, was half African-American, half Filipino. And Filipinos, I’ve learned, have many wonderful traits – the main ones being passion and pride. I went to the Philippines for the first time this spring, and it was amazing. People were like, “We’re related! We’re family.” I actually played three of my own shows there.

Hailee’s great-uncle, the brother of her maternal grandfather, is child actor Larry Domasin. Larry is pictured here and here.

Hailee’s paternal grandfather was Herbert Melvin Steinfeld (the son of Shmuel, later Samuel “Sam,” Steinfeld, and of Brindel Chaimovna Zelenetskaya, later Bessie Ethel Zelensky). Herbert was born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York. Sam was a Romanian Jewish emigrant, from Iași, Iași, and was the son of Hirsch, later Julius, Steinfeld, and of Dweire, later Dora, Schwartz. Bessie was a Belarusian Jewish emigrant, from Romanovo (now Lenino), Slutsk, Minsk, and was the daughter of Chaim Zelenetsky, later Hyman Mendel Zelensky, and of Brize, later Sarah, Cohen.

Hailee’s paternal grandmother is Joy A. Wagner, later Duberstein (the daughter of Arthur Lindemann, later Wagner, and of Minnie, later Myra, Siegel). Joy was born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York. She adopted the surname Duberstein when her mother remarried. Arthur was the son of Max Lindemann, a German Jewish emigrant, and of Charlotte “Jennie” Wagner, a Ukrainian Jewish emigrant, from Lviv. Hailee’s great-grandmother Minnie was born in Brooklyn, to Russian Jewish parents, Joseph “Joe” Siegel and Fannie Mitnitskaya.

Hailee’s maternal grandfather, Ricardo/Simonas Guillermo Domasin, was born in 1938 in Los Angeles, California. Ricardo’s father, Pastor “Peter” Loresca Domasin, was born, in 1902, in Panglao, Bohol, Central Visayas, Philippines. Pastor was the son of Gerónimo Domasin y Lorejo, or Gerónimo Lorejo Domasin in Filipino, and of Cirila Loresca y Domaluan, or Cirila Domaluan Loresca in Filipino. A picture of Pastor can be seen here.

Ricardo’s mother, Evelyn Olivia Bain, was born in 1910 in Los Angeles; Evelyn was Hailee’s great-grandmother. Evelyn was African-American, and she and her parents, Thomas Edward Bain (born in Kansas, to Gabrel Bain and Isabella/Belle Johnson) and Wilma Frances “Willie” Peterson (born in Arkansas, to William F. Peterson and Nannie Hall), are listed as either African-American or, sometimes, as “half white,” in census records. A picture of Evelyn can be seen here.

Hailee’s maternal grandmother is Laurita Lee Hinkle (the daughter of William Hicks Hinkle and Edith Laurita Jones). Laurita was born in Texas, and had English, German, Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, and Scottish, ancestry. William was the son of Joshua Madison Hinkle and Ella Malona Payne. Edith was the daughter of Charles Kirby Jones and Ethel Effie Smith.

Hailee’s matrilineal ancestry can be traced back to her fourth great-grandmother, Penelope “Phenina” Watson.

I belived that she had Filipino and African American heritage until I saw pics of her mother. Her mom looks like a typical caucasian lady with blue eyes and northern european features. I can’t imagine someone being from a mix background like Black and Filipino yet having a european phenotype. I do not speak from ignorance, I’m just stating facts. Her moms dad must not be the biological father.

    • Oaken05 says:

lol, she and her brother especially are clearly mixed race.

      Sorry, not up for debate.

      • TB says:

Do you think her mother looks mix. That was my point since that’s were her suspose mix ancestry comes from. Besides her and her brother look more like their Ashkenazi Jewish father is you ask me. But, it’s your opinion.

        • Oaken05 says:

It doesn’t matter what I think her mother looks like. The children’s phenotype is of mixed race, and we know they are her children.

You’re the one who came in her with an opinion.

          • TB says:

Having traces of a Epicanthic fold in your eyes don’t automatically pinpoint East or South East Asian ancestry. Any ethnicity can have them. Swedish ski-racer Jens Byggmark has such eyes while being Nordic by phenotype, but does that mean he has Asian ancestry? Not likely. You’re right, both you and I have an opinion on the subject. My mother and I get mistaken as Asian or part Asian often because we have an Epicanthic fold, but it isn’t our ethnicity. Can you pinpoint traces of their African American heritage?

      • andrew says:

        @TB

I can get what you mean but her mother does not look Northern European. Her phenotype surely leans towards the European side and she would not stand out among a crowd of white people, but her facial features are not the ones of an European person.

    • Ethnicity37 says:

That happens all the time especially to multigenerational groups ( like African-Americans and Hispanics). It is clear that although the mother doesn’t look “Mixed” to some people, I think she does to me( I am African-American), that she still carries Asian and African genes which can create a children that looks like that.

  2. cwm85 says:

She’s mostly european and Jewish. Her Asian, African American percentage are low but admixture is admixture no matter how low. She is Asian and Black as well.

  3. Aiden says:

I can see the Filipino and the African. She doesn’t look white to me.

    • Lee says:

Trolling much? Stop trying to define a race that DOESN’T exist, white is just a label Europeans live by. It’s a culturally term.

      • Lee says:

        Not a biological term

      • Lee says:

        Were never a ——- race

        • Aiden says:

I’m not a troll. Look at her facial features. She looks clearly part Filipino.

        • Aiden says:

I’m not saying that she doesn’t look “European”, I’m saying that she doesn’t look white/Caucasian.

          • Lee says:

You’re clearly a ——- moron, just quit posting

          • Lee says:

Lightness of the skin in Europeans didn’t develop until 8000 years ago, you do know how we originated light skin right? Mixing with the MIDDLE EAST FARMERS (WEST ASIANS) they brought light skin into Europe.

          • Lee says:

None of the modern day human “races” was involved in the Out of Africa events nor that modern day “Africans” existed at that time. The DNA of today’s “Africans” same as all other humans has been shaped by more recent population upheavals. All of humanity evolved with time, all humans are 99.9% similar.

Quote(Lightness of the skin in Europeans didn’t develop until 8000 years ago)

            I think it’s closer to 55-7000 years

Quote( Mixing with the MIDDLE EAST FARMERS (WEST ASIANS) they brought light skin into Europe.)

I think they just brought in one , maybe two of the three genes responsible for the light skin. One of which was brought out of Africa during one of the waves out( at least from what I read)

      • passingtime85 says:

A medical examiner or anthropologist can identify you racially, by skeleton, skull, and teeth.

    • TB says:

Honestly, her mother looks full white. I would never guess that she’s half black and Filipino unless her father has significant european admixture. Regardless her mix ancestry should be prominent since African/Asian features and genetics are usually stronger than European/Caucasian. Hailee’s grandfather is probably not biologically related to her.

      • coco says:

Well hailee’s mom isn’t half, she’s a quarter Filipino, a quarter African-American/Mulatto (her mother was out as Mulatto on some census’s & looks it) & the father is full white so that would make Hailee’s mom mostly white. But I agree with you… for someone with BOTH African & Asian descent that’s recent, she looks hella European. I’m use to seeing white/African mixes look like that but not white/African/Asian lol

  4. wcoastbo says:

Wow, what a mix! She is truly Halo-halo.

  5. Jacklyn 224 says:

Yes hailee!beautiful mix. That would mean her is triracial but clearly looks white only.Funny how genes skip a generation. She’s a beautiful mixed -white girl!
