Gale Sondergaard was an American actress. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Anthony Adverse (1936).
Her father, Hans Tjellesen Smidt Søndergaard/Sondergaard, was from Rødding, Denmark. Her mother, Anne Kirstine (Holm), was from Vonsild, Nørre Tyrstrup, Vejle, Denmark. She was married to screenwriter and film director Herbert Biberman, until his death. The couple had two children, who were adopted.
