Fernando Henrique Cardoso, also known as FHC, is a Brazilian sociologist, professor, and politician. A member of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party, he served as President of Brazil, from 1 January, 1995 to 31 December, 2002. He was also Joint President of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party, from 25 June, 1988 to 1989, Minister of Foreign Affairs, from October 2, 1992 to May 20, 1993, and Minister of Finance, from 19 May, 1993 to 30 March, 1994, among other duties.

President Cardoso is the son of Nayde (Silva) and Leônidas Cardoso. He is said to have a black great-grandfather and a mulatto great-grandmother.

He is married to Patrícia Kundrát. He was previously married to Ruth Cardoso, until her death. He has three children with Ruth.

President Cardoso’s paternal grandfather was Joaquim Ignácio Baptista Cardoso (the son of Felicissimo do Espírito Santo Cardoso and Emerenciana Vicência de Azevedo). Felicissimo was the son of Manuel Cordoso de Campos and Rita Porfíria da Silva e Oliveira.

President Cardoso’s paternal grandmother was named Leonídia Fernandes.

President Cardoso’s maternal grandparents were named Silvestre Domingues de Araújo e Silva and Cândida Rego.
