Alfred Deakin was an Australian politician. He served as Prime Minister of Australia, from 24 September, 1903 to 27 April, 1904, again from 5 July, 1905 to 13 November, 1908, and once again from 2 June, 1909 to 29 April, 1910. He was also Attorney-General for Australia, from 1 January, 1901 to 24 September, 1903, Leader of the Protectionist Party, from 24 September, 1903 to 26 May, 1909, Minister for External Affairs, from 24 September, 1903 to 27 April, 1904, and again from 5 July, 1905 to 13 November, 1908, Leader of the Commonwealth Liberal Party, from 26 May, 1909 to 20 January, 1913, and Leader of the Opposition, from 26 May, 1909 to 2 June, 1909, and again from 1 July, 1910 to 20 January, 1913, among other duties.

Prime Minister Deakin was the son of Sarah (Bill) and William Deakin. His father was English, from Towcester, Northamptonshire, England. His mother was born in Wales, of English and Welsh ancestry.

Prime Minister Deakin’s paternal grandparents were John Deakin (the son of William Deakin and Mary Howcroft) and Catherine Cross. William was the son of William Deakin and Mary Adams.

Prime Minister Deakin’s maternal grandfather was William Augustus Bill (the son of Richard Bill and Anne Tomlins). Richard was born in Monmouthshire, Wales, to and English father, John Bill, and a mother, Catherine Beaman, who might have been English as well. Anne was born in Leominster, Herefordshire, England, the daughter of John Tomlins.

Prime Minister Deakin’s maternal grandmother was Sarah Jones. Sarah was born in Monmouthshire, Wales.
