Alex Proyas is an Australian film director, screenwriter, and producer. He has directed the films Spirits of the Air, Gremlins of the Clouds; The Crow, Dark City, Garage Days, I, Robot; Knowing, and Gods of Egypt, and also wrote his Spirits and co-wrote his Dark City and Garage Days. He has also directed many short films and music videos.

He was born in Alexandria, Egypt, to ethnic Greek parents. His father was an Egyptiot, a Greek-Egyptian, whose family had lived in Egypt for generations. His mother is a Greek Cypriot. His family moved to Sydney, Australia, when he was three. Alex is married to artist Catherine Linsley, who has worked on his films.
