Ralph Kiner was an American professional baseball player, and broadcaster. An outfielder, he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Chicago Cubs, and the Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball (MLB). He led all National League contemporaries in home runs between 1946 and 1952. He was also an an announcer for the New York Mets, from their inception; and general manager of the Pacific Coast League San Diego Padres. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975.
Ralph was the son of Beatrice Marie and Ralph Macklin Kiner. After his father’s death, when he was four, he was raised mostly in Alhambra, California. He was married to DiAnn Kiner, until her death. Ralph had three children with his former wife, professional tennis player Nancy Chaffee.
He was a second cousin, twice removed, of professional baseball player Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
Ralph’s paternal grandfather was Andrew A. Kiner (the son of John Kiner and Mary Ann McPherran). Andrew was born in Pennsylvania. John was of German descent, the son of George Jacob Kiner, whose father was German; and of Sarah Salome Ebert. Mary Ann was born in Pennsylvania, the daughter of John Andrew McPherran, whose father was Scottish; and of Elizabeth Steward/Stewart, whose father was from County Offaly, Northern Ireland.
Ralph’s paternal grandmother was Clara Witherow Wilson (the daughter of Major William Wilson and Rebecca Witherow). Clara was born in Pennsylvania. Major was born in Pennsylvania, the son of John W. Wilson and Margaret Fleming. Rebecca was born in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Robert Witherow and Jannette Jane Scott.
Ralph’s maternal grandfather’s surname was Goldstein/Grayson.
