Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American graffiti artist, painter, and musician. He was a leading figure in the Neo-expressionism movement and the hip-hop culture of the 1980s.

He was the son of Matilda (Andrades) and Gérard Basquiat. His father was born in Port-au-Prince, Ouest, Haiti. His mother was born in New York, to Puerto Rican parents. Jean-Michel’s paternal grandfather was Pierre Daniel Léonce Basquiat (the son of Pierre Nicolas Rodolphe Basquiat and Marie Anne Elvira Bérette).

Jean-Michel’s paternal grandmother was Marie Marthe Cheri Augustin (the daughter of Elie Augustin and Rose Elisabeth Isabel Joseph). Marie was born in Port Au Prince, Ouest, Haiti. Elie was the son of Antoine Kébreau, and of a woman surnamed Augustin.
