Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American graffiti artist, painter, and musician. He was a leading figure in the Neo-expressionism movement and the hip-hop culture of the 1980s.
He was the son of Matilda (Andrades) and Gérard Basquiat. His father was born in Port-au-Prince, Ouest, Haiti. His mother was born in New York, to Puerto Rican parents. Jean-Michel’s paternal grandfather was Pierre Daniel Léonce Basquiat (the son of Pierre Nicolas Rodolphe Basquiat and Marie Anne Elvira Bérette).
