Laphonza Butler is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, she has served as a U.S. Senator from California, since October 3, 2023. She was a union organizer for nurses in Baltimore, MD and Milwaukee, WI, janitors in Philadelphia, PA, and hospital staff in New Haven, CT; as well as president of the California SEIU State Council, and EMILY’s List, and a regent of the University of California.

She moved to California in 2009. Laphonza has a daughter with her partner Neneki Lee.
